Time-lapse of spontaneous painting…5ft x 4ft. acrylic on unprimed cotton canvas. There is a great quote by the brilliant #paulascher, partner @pentagramdesign that touches on this idea of spontaneity in reference to a logo design she created almost instantly in a meeting, “It took me a few seconds to draw it, but it took me 34 years to learn how to draw it in a few seconds.”
This quote so nicely illustrates the role of time in creation. The time it takes to physically create is only one aspect of what actually goes into the work. Sometimes we can’t get out of the way of our minds when trying to understand a work. Time is less important than quality. There is more than time in a work, there is a lifetime.

“Something In the Way” : 48 x 60 in., acrylic and water on unprimed cotton canvas, 2024.
The other day I was talking with my youngest daughter Daisy and she wanted to know what we should do and I said, “Sometimes doing nothing is the best something.” She smiled and then we proceeded to do exactly that and it was wonderful.

There is something in the way these forms and color behave together that I really like. I’d be curious to hear what you think.
This painting is based off of Scrap n.120 from 2021, which you can see in slide 2. It feels to good to have made my way back to these studies and realize the work in a larger format. Also, there is something about the work of Giorgio Morandi that comes to mind when looking at this painting.

Back in the day when I entered design school I was jolted by the new and at the time unknown activity of putting work on the wall for critiques.
I had never had to do anything like that in any of my prior schooling. Now everyone had to pin their work to the wall for all eyes to see and critique. I had never felt so vulnerable. It made me uncomfortable. And it took me a minute to realize that this was the harsh reality of doing design work.
Your work is for somebody else, the client. They are going to want to see it and dissect it and you better be able to rationally explain the hows and whys.
Wow, I can still feel the butterflies. I could see that I had to rapidly evolve. It was a sink or swim moment. I decided I was going to give it my all and learn to swim. I realized that I had to be able to take the words of others and use them to help me grow and improve the work, instead of taking the critiques personally.
Not everybody could do this. It was never put into these exact words, but that was the lesson. Don’t take anything personally.
Since then I discovered the work of @donmiguelruiz and his book The Four Agreements, the second agreement being exactly that - don’t take anything personally. It is such a valuable lesson.
I bring it up because so many of us spend time in this digital landscape putting ourselves up on the critique wall, but maybe without the personal tools necessary to deal with it.
My work is personal and I do enjoy sharing the work, but when I put it up on the scrolling wall of Instagram I have to remind myself of that second agreement and not take what others say personally.
I make the work firstly for myself. It is born from my mind and hands because I enjoy the act of creating. Secondly, I share the work because it may be a conduit for connecting with others, which can be exciting.
Sometimes sharing the work feels like tossing a penny into a wishing well with the hope that it simply brings a moment of joy to someone else.
With that I’m calling this piece, “My Frontal Lobe.” It is a piece of me, it is a glimpse into my mind. I’m not sure it is finished, but here it is.

The sun came out on Friday to celebrate Daisy’s birthday with us! Happy birthday to the one and only Daisy Storm! 💫 And for the final day of ski season @jacksonhole the sun was out again! A fantastic weekend and end to the season. I hope everyone is well out there! ✌️

Nine new studies now available. All are 8 x 6 in. on Strathmore heavyweight paper (350lb). These studies are explorations in color and form relationships as I consider larger works on canvas. I’m enjoying the playful feeling of these. They feel like figures moving to the sound of their own beat or soft rocks stacked ready to tumble at any moment.

Phoebe finding some levity in the studio. I love having my daughters around the studio for moments like this.
And also, while it isn’t perfect, I appreciate having @instagram as a kind of living slide show so I can save these moments and be able to look back on them as time rolls by…as the wise Ferris Buehler once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Here are nine new watercolor marker studies on 8”x 6” @strathmoreart heavyweight paper (350 lb.), now available on my Website and Instagram Shop (links in bio).⚡️
I’m having fun working with these colors and shapes. Feels like a dance. My wife said these pieces remind her of the sound suits by @nickcaveart, which hadn’t occurred to me, but I can see it!
Those sound suits are incredible! I saw an exhibition of his years ago in Los Angeles and the work is so alive and cool. Check out his work if you are not familiar with it and if you are familiar with it revisit it! 😎
Send me a message if you have any questions. 👊✨
